Born in Geelong, Australia, he trained at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology before winning a scholarship in 1958 to study silversmithing under Professor Robert Goodden at the Royal College of Art in London. By 1963, Devlin had achieved international recognition and was commissioned to design the new Australian decimal coinage. After a period working in the United States, he returned to London in 1965 and established his workshop in Clerkenwell, employing his first craftsman the following year. Devlin became known for his distinctive surface textures and innovative techniques, producing sculptural silver that combined technical precision with modern design. Between 1975 and 1985 he operated a prestigious showroom in Conduit Street, London, and later served as Prime Warden of the Goldsmiths’ Company in 1996-97. Devlin’s work is represented in major public and private collections worldwide. For further information see our Makers and Retailers page on Stuart Devlin.
