The mirror is of triangular form and stands on three legs, with a hinged rear support carved as a simulated tree branch. The front is centred with an artist’s palette shaped mirror plate, framed by deeply carved branches that extend organically around the border. Two bears cling playfully to the mirror in animated poses, while a small squirrel appears at the lower left, moving towards the base with its bushy tail raised, adding a lively narrative element to the composition. This mirror is a strong example of traditional Swiss Black Forest carving, showcasing the humour, movement, and character for which the region’s workmen are known. Both decorative and functional, it remains an engaging interior piece with unmistakable Black Forest charm. Black Forest carvings come with the common misconception that they are from Germany when they actually come from Switzerland.
